IRC Chat
#furaffinity is FA’s official chat channel. Located on Furnet IRC, and offers FA users an open chat room to discuss life, the universe
and everything. In addition, FurNet offers hundreds of additional chat
channels to join! Getting Started
You'll need three things to get started using Fur Affinity's IRC chat. It's simple, easy and fast!
- An IRC Client
- Connect to the IRC Server
- Register a Username
- Join #furaffinity
IRC ClientsWindows Clients- mIRC is the tried-and-true Windows IRC client. It offers a lot of depth and a wide array of features, but can be a little cumbersome for first time users. They offer an installation walkthrough which will help you get setup and connected.
- vIRC is an alternative to IRC that offers a similar wealth of features, but with added graphical ability.
- Miranda IM - an open-source application that skimps on features, but offers all the basics.
Mac Clients
- Snak is the recommended IRC application for users operating under the watchful eye of Steve Jobs' turtlenecks.
Crossplatform Clients- Pidgin is the defacto chat standard of the penguin generation.
- Chatzilla is an IRC plug-in for Firefox, and is highly recommended. It's simple, easy to use and offers tabbed chatting.
- X-Chat is a capable, multi-platform Win/*nix chat application. (Free Windows Version)
- Irssi is for command-line aficionados.
iPhone Clients- Colloquy is a solid, well rounded IRC app that supports multi-tasking, channel and user support. It costs $1.99, but is well worth the asking price.
Android Clients- AndChat is considered one of the best chat apps for the Android platform. It's easy to use, simple and well worth a download. Best of all: it's free!
- YAAIC (Yet Another Android IRC Client) is a simple, though well recommended chat application for the Android platform.
- Android IRC is a full featured app for $4.99. While it's one of the few Android apps that costs money, it's equally powerful and feature rich.
Connection Instructions
Once you have your IRC client installed it's time to connect. When prompted, you can add in Fur Affinity's server information to IRC client's setup page.
- Server: irc.furnet.org:6667
- Channel: #furaffinity
In addition, you can also use the command /server irc.furnet.org to connect as well. Quick Tip: Once already have an IRC client installed you can simply click here to join.
Registering Your Username
There are two steps to creating a nickname on IRC. Once connected to the server, you can will need to:
- Select Your Username - Type in /nick desiredname, the hit enter. If the name is available the server will let you know.
- Register Your Username - Register your username with Nickserv by typing in the following: /ns register yourdesiredpassword your@email.address.com.
You only need to do this once! That's all there is to it. Identifying Your Username
When signing onto IRC you will need to identify (log in) to your username. To identify, type /ns identify yourpassword to verify your username. You will need to do this every time you connect to the network. Some clients can automate this process. Please check your client's documentation for further instructions.
Useful IRC Commands- /join #channel - Using /join will let you join a chat channel of that name. For example, /join #furaffinity will let you join the #furaffinity IRC channel.
- /list - Lists all channels available to join
- /me and /action - Shows you doing an action in the chat.
- /whois username - Doing a /whois gives you information about a person. For example, /whos Fender will give you information about Fender, what channel he's in and more.
- /nick - Changes your nickname/chat handle. Example: /nick Random_Name_123" will change your name to Random_Name_123.
- /ns register - Lets you register a nickname.
- /ns identify - Identifies/logs you into your registered nickname
